Get Started

PictureThis can be used as a Dashboard Extension or as a Viz Extension. Although the extension's functionalities remain the same, the way they are configured slightly differs.

Dashboard Extension

A quick tip before you start: In general when you are working with Extensions, it is Best Practice to create a dedicated “datasheet” for your extension. This allows your general dashboard actions to interact with this datasheet and your Extension will dynamically respond to that.

The first you must do to configure your extension is select the datasheet that holds the columns that you want to use in PictureThis. In your preparations, it is important to first add the datasheet to your dashboard before configuring the extension, follow our BLOG for the best ways of setting up your data. Now in the configuration screen select the worksheet you want to retrieve data from. This worksheet will be the input for PictureThis. You can always add extra fields to this datasheet and open the configure screen again to use them in your PictureThis extension (labels, colors, links, etc.).

Viz Extension

With Viz Extensions, it is easier to set up PictureThis. In an empty worksheet, use the marks pane's dropdown to find the 'Add Extensions' button. Upon clicking that, you can either use the free version of PictureThis from the Tableau Exchange or upload a .trex file. Once the extension has loaded, you can drag and drop columns into the Image marks card or the Data marks card to view the visual.

Keep in mind, that to use Viz Extensions, you need to use Tableau Cloud or Tableau Desktop/Server 2024.2 or later.
