# InputTables username setup

In SuperTables for Power BI, the username for InputTables is chosen in the general InputTables configuration (configuration → InputTables), *not* from the visual’s Format pane. To make a column available for selection, first add it to the visual (either the **Column** or **Value** box in the Format pane). If the username column isn’t added to the visual, InputTables won’t detect it and it won’t appear in the configuration dropdown.

Once you add the column it will appear in the SuperTables grid. Open the **Custom configuration**, go to the InputTables tab, log in, and select the column as the username. After you save the InputTables configuration, the chosen username column will be registered with InputTables and will be removed from the SuperTables grid.

<figure><img src="/files/v10tdw7jqK1qHQokj48F" alt="InputTables configuration with the selected username column." width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If you don’t already have a username column, you can create one in your semantic model by adding a new measure that uses the `USERNAME()` function — this creates a column containing the current user’s name which you can then add to the visual and select in InputTables.

For more information on InputTables, see the original documentation here: [InputTables](https://docs.infotopics.com/inputtables/)

# UI Overview

# Pivot

SuperTables has Pivot mode, which is a feature that allows users to summarize, analyze, explore, and present large amounts of data dynamically. In pivot mode, users can reorganize and aggregate data to generate meaningful insights through a pivot table.

<figure><img src="/files/nMFgS9xGHXW3ZyJs7oO7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The Pivot Mode can be enabled by opening the side panel and clicking on the Pivot Mode toggle. Your table will now only display the aggregate values of the columns that you had enabled. Try enabling some dimension columns. Enabling the columns will the dynamically aggregate the data based on the data in the column.

<figure><img src="/files/89GKXWW7VFliFfr0CQrO" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Formulas

This section describes the formulas available to users for on-the-fly data analysis. The formula editor allows end users to add formula-based columns to their SuperTables view using the measures and dimensions available to them.

<figure><img src="/files/4sJkxx0mYlRd9Zuv1ULL" alt=""><figcaption><p>Formula editor pane</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Alignment options

You can align the Column or just the Header either 'Left', 'Right' or 'Center'. There is also an 'Auto' option to align the text in relation to the rest of the table.

#### Formatting options

Formulas can be formatted as a decimal number, currency or percentage. The amount of decimals can be edited, as well as the pre-and-suffix appended to the calculated measure.

#### Color options

You can customise the column background color, column font color, header background color or the header font color with this option.

#### IF/ELSE configuration

Using the If-Else Formula Editor, advanced formulas can be created using conditions for both strings and values. Set the “if” statement, calculations for when the condition is and isn’t met, and potential other “if” statements using additional “else-if” blocks. Advanced conditions using AND/OR clauses can also be set in these formulas.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/If-Else.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

To learn more about how to create formulas, read the [guide on calculations](/supertables/guides/setting-up-calculations).

# Row Groupings

<figure><img src="/files/rz0kAhKGWrurE3Can4TL" alt=""><figcaption><p>Grouping rows example.</p></figcaption></figure>

A feature of SuperTables is that it allows your dashboard users to create their grouping hierarchy. This can be done without the need for a Tableau fixed Hierarchy and in any order your dashboard user would like. To use this feature just drag a column to the grouping bar and drop it in the grouping bar. The rows will now be aggregated based on the grouping which you can select yourself. You can use multiple levels of grouping to create your hierarchies just by adding columns to the grouping bar.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Row-Groups.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Status Bar

The Status Bar is present at the bottom of the SuperTables by default. The Status Bar contains the current information about the data.

<figure><img src="/files/REqI4zx6jzQH3idipn2g" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Status bar can contain information about the rows, filtered rows, count and other things depending on the context.

# Custom Views

{% hint style="info" %}
This guide is for **Tableau** only. For Power BI you can use the bookmarks feature which will automatically save the state of your current table.
{% endhint %}

All changes you make to the SuperTables layout can either be stored in the workbook settings (no personal views possible) or in a special dedicated parameter for storing the SaveState of your SuperTable. When using a Parameter to store the Layout Settings you enable your dashboard users to create personal/private views on your published dashboards (Tableau Server / Tableau Online). Please make sure you use a dedicated parameter per SuperTables instance in your workbook, since parameters are global within a workbook. Using the same parameter twice in one workbook might lead to unexpected results! The parameter to store your SuperTables settings can be created by:

* Creating a new parameter
* Using a logical name like “PM Savestate Salesdashboard”
* Setting the “Data type” to: **String**
* Empty the “Current value”
* Setting the option “**All**” for the “**Allowable values**”

<figure><img src="/files/wAlzxviFhr0unGc0jN84" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Save/Store your parameter
* Head to the General tab of your SuperTables configuration pane and select the new parameter from the dropdown

<figure><img src="/files/lIrrgR5Rte8jyxtbgeMO" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Custom Views

Create your own custom views of SuperTables! Each user can create their own unique view of their dashboard containing SuperTables. Wish to just see a compact view, sales view or a customer only view? Save as many views as you wish to be easily accessible every time you log in. You can make any view your default as well as making them available for your team!

# Inline Filter

# Pivot Your Table

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Pivot-Mode.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Dynamic Aggregation

{% hint style="info" %}
This guide is for **Tableau** only.
{% endhint %}

We combine the power of Tableau Parameters and visible columns in SuperTables. By doing this we will automatically remove / add detail from the datasheet which results in a different level of aggregation. With this incredible feature you only query the data you are looking at, and Table Calculations / LOD calculations will also keep working like you expect! On top of that you benefit from a performance boost!

#### Dynamic Aggregation V2 (SuperTables 5.5.1+)&#x20;

We have introduced an easier and faster way of setting up dynamic aggregation which only requires 1 parameter! Please find attached workbook for an example:

{% file src="/files/6QkKITxEaQ8Of3UQTQb8" %}

#### Set up Dynamic Aggregation V2

* 1\. Create a string parameter with allowable values on 'All', and select it in the dropdown above. For example: My Parameter
* 2\. Create a calculated field for the dimension you want to auto aggregate. For example: 'My Ship Mode'
* 3\. Use this calculation:\
  IIF(CONTAINS(\[My Parameter], "|My Ship Mode|"), \[Ship Mode], "\_")\
  Optional: Surround the name of the calculation in "|" to ensure unique column selection
* 4\. Remove the original \[Ship Mode] from the datasheet.
* Tip: If you want to reuse your current \[Ship Mode] column configuration, rename \[Ship Mode] to something else (i.e. 'Original Ship Mode') and name you calculated field 'Ship Mode'.

<figure><img src="/files/QybaRG4GTmc85SBaFF4g" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Set up Dynamic Aggregation V1 (deprecated)

Enter the configuration screen of SuperTables and head to the **Appearance** tab. Under Layout Options tick ‘Enable auto aggregation based on the visible columns in the table’

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Dynamic-Aggregation.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Our example:**

1\. Create a string parameter with the exact same name as your column. For example: ‘Category’\
2\. Create a calculated field with the same name as the parameter in step 1.\
3\. Use this calculation: IIF(\[parameter\_name] = ‘true’, \[name\_of\_the\_dimension], ‘\_’)\
4\. Check if the parameter updates when you show/hide the column. In this example the column ‘Category’.

Next create a parameter of type ‘string’ with the current value ‘true’ as next we will be creating a calculated field. Follow our GIF to set up the calculated field.

**Parameter:**

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Parameter.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Calculated Field:**

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Calculated-Field-2.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

All done, reload the extension to implement the dynamic aggregation to your SuperTable!

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Dynamic-Aggregation-Front-End.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Formulas

This section describes the formulas available to users for on-the-fly data analysis. The formula editor allows end users to add formula-based columns to their SuperTables view using the measures and dimensions available to them.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/STFORMULAS.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Formatting options

Formulas can be formatted as a decimal number, currency or percentage. The amount of decimals can be edited, as well as the pre-and-suffix appended to the calculated measure.

# Data Tab

On this tab, you can configure how SuperTable fetches and represents your data. For a detailed overview, visit one of the following sections:

[Create Alias](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/create-alias)

[Data Fetch Method](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/data-fetch-method)

[Dimension Data Pane](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/dimension-data-pane)

[Measure Data Pane](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/measure-data-pane)

[Calculations Pane](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/calculations-pane)

[Column Groups Pane](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/column-groups-pane)

# Create Alias

All columns can be aliased. By default, the name of the column will be presented in the column headers of SuperTables. Using the first option that says “Column display name” on the Data pane of Configuration allows you to create an alias that will be shown in your column headers.

<figure><img src="/files/acFmqln1iGkMpuLNq1gu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Data Fetch Method

SuperTables offers two ways to fetch your data to the extension, a bulk load all at once or paged loading. The Paged loading option “Loading Screen” requires Tableau version 2024.1 or higher or Tableau Cloud.

**All at once**

This is recommended for smaller data sets and the quickest way to see your data. The data will be sent all at one time.

**Loading Screen**

Recommended for larger data sets, the data will be sent via paged loading where you will see a loading screen. This will prevent any timeouts but may take longer than the “All at once” option.

<figure><img src="/files/pcfDQNQ6ew1dEeMy55Bc" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Dimension Data Pane

In this section, we will take you through the dimension data pane and explain the options in the dimension configuration screen. Format each dimension field individually to suit your dashboard needs. The sections below provide a more detailed overview on configuring your dimensions.

[Dimension Format](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/dimension-data-pane/dimension-format)

[Colors](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/dimension-data-pane/colors)

[Dimension Properties](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/dimension-data-pane/dimension-properties)

# Dimension Format

Here, you can choose the style of your dimension. Plenty of options such as a Text field, a URL that can be rendered into an image, HTML, Markdown or even an emoji:

### Text

The text field will view similar to what you’d see in a Tableau table.

<figure><img src="/files/NK4DJl6pjG0LjyS0mBwD" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Image

If your dimension holds data of an image URL, have that shown in your SuperTable. Add the width and height in px into the text boxes to set the proportions of the image. A good tip is to enable ‘**auto row height based on cell content**’ under the **Appearance** tab to enable larger images in the grid and have the row height automatically calculated. We suggest setting at least one of the dimensions of the image size for better layout control. Leave the width and/or height empty for auto-detection and show the full image (max sizes).

{% hint style="info" %}
You can use base64 encoded images by creating a column in your dataset or calculated field to store these values as strings.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/ZrtNSkx377Fe2EFTwyot" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### HTML

Would you like videos shown within your Supertable? If your data holds embedded HTML, choose HTML as your dimension Type.

<figure><img src="/files/p4G8bWgAi0oOlgn12Yzw" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Markdown

Use the markdown language on your dimension. Such as header styles, # and more. Use this [website](https://www.markdownguide.org/basic-syntax/) to see the markdown language that can be used in SuperTables.

<figure><img src="/files/F0eAJWF3gi8sayOzUFai" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Emoji

Using the emoji codes in your dataset, show emojis in your SuperTable.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/TNCZL5rcua7RATPRCkli" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can find the emoji codes [here](https://www.quackit.com/character_sets/emoji/emoji_v3.0/unicode_emoji_v3.0_characters_all.cfm)

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Emojis-in-SuperTables.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Date Format

If your dimension is a **date** type, you can format the date in the view. For example “YYYY-MM” to 2025-05 for May 2025.

<figure><img src="/files/sOmAnCgGPYNtFPxEqDvA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Filter date

Filter now on a date part including exact date or even a range of dates. Want to show data over a specific time, easily filter your date to show in your viz.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Date-Range.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Formatted date fields in SuperTables can now be used for aggregation. So if you have an exact date field in your dataset, and format the column to show only Year and Month you can aggregate that column (using the grouping bar) on Year-Month and the exact dates are aggregated based on your date formatting.

\
\ <br>

# Colors

Set a fixed background or font color to your column. If you have a sales and profit column for example and they’re the most important columns in your data set, grab your users attention by colorizing each column so users see the information that’s most important in your visualization. Set the color by clicking on the color palette on any measure or dimension in the data pane. <br>

<figure><img src="/files/KYeo9dRHLsMlcnHC2n0a" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/SuperTables-Column-Background-Color.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Dimension Properties

### Styles

Set the individual style of the Header and the Values in the table.

<figure><img src="/files/69m3UsmtpgzDswBalWuF" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Hide column in sidebar

Sometimes you want to use columns in a calculation but not show them in the SuperTable. Enable the "Hide column in sidebar" option if you wish to hide the column from the sidebar so users cannot enable this column.

<figure><img src="/files/sjGgkPz3BOFOEFUsgUpZ" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hiding a column in the sidebar</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide header name

Enabling the "Hide header name" option this will remove the column header from the SuperTable view.

<figure><img src="/files/NjK0lpiC1yNuj5gyh1rg" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hiding a header name</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide inline filter

Hide the filter option for a specific dimension in the Supertables views. You see in our example it’s not possible to filter on Order ID but possible on Product Name.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/9NILfdJyoNTcXwbgCa1U" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hiding inline filters</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide grand total

Hide the column total value. For instance you want to show the Sales total but not the quantity total in the total row of a grouped SuperTable, hide the total from your quantity column.&#x20;

### Show aggregated value when grouping

When grouping a dimension show the aggregated value of the members in the group. Decide what the default aggregation should be which includes Count and now CountD!

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Show-Aggregated-Value.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### User can change aggregation method while grouping

### Alignment

Choose the alignment of the text within your SuperTables view, as well as the header of the specific column.

### Header Tooltip

Change the tooltip of your selected dimension. By default, it will show the dimension name. This tooltip is for the column header only.

<figure><img src="/files/YaXCTLfInBFWwSStbS2s" alt=""><figcaption><p>Setting a custom header tooltip</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/53ggHmJofIbmNSgosFZo" alt=""><figcaption><p>The custom header tooltip</p></figcaption></figure>

### Filter Style

***Multiple Values** (list)* – A dropdown to be able to show or hide values. The dropdown will contain all the values of the dimension.&#x20;

***Wildcard Match*** – The column will show a search bar for this column to be used as an inline filter.&#x20;

***Both -*** Both styles are applied.

<figure><img src="/files/PEefXd0FbMrBPZVBWFty" alt=""><figcaption><p>Filter style</p></figcaption></figure>

### URL Action

Entering a URL will allow users to click any cell in this column to open a new tab in their web browser. You can refer to any other value from the same row of data by wrapping the field name with angle brackets. You can of course also use a dynamically calculated field that contains a dynamic URL based on the content of that specific row of data. With this, you can set URL parameters to open a dashboard that has already been filtered on specific column values in your selection.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/CmJLbzKOoYuDcwItoj5x" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Conditional color formatting

<figure><img src="/files/4W9pYZqHh9P9p3cseKAT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Color style

With this option, you can set conditional formatting. There are three options for conditional formatting:&#x20;

1. Change the font color of the cell&#x20;
2. Change the background color of the cell&#x20;
3. Change the background color of the entire row&#x20;

#### Background color

Use **Background color** to color rows based on specific dimension values.

To configure this:

1. Open **Format Extension**
2. Go to the **Data** tab
3. Select the relevant **dimension**
4. Scroll down to **Background color**
5. Define the value and the color you want to apply
6. Enable **Use color as background color of entire row** if the color should be applied to the full row instead of only the selected cell

This setting can be used when you want specific values in a dimension to drive row-level highlighting.

<figure><img src="/files/tG5VtpW8F6BqjpIkxfDq" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
Please note that you cannot configure colors for a dimension with more than 50 members. &#x20;
{% endhint %}

# Measure Data Pane

This section describes the configuration options you can set with Measures. Here you will be able to format the style of your measure to from a number to a percentage for example. Define the aggregation of your measure as well as conditional format the color of your cells. We will describe each option available. In one of the sections below.

[Measure Format](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/measure-data-pane/measure-format)

[Measure Properties](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/measure-data-pane/measure-properties)

# Measure Format

Here, you can choose the format and style of your measure. Plenty of options such as a number format, unit and how values are represented.

### Number Format

For measures you can select one of the following number formats:

* Decimal
* Currency
* Percentage
* Time

### Positive & Negative Values

Format how you wish your positive and negative values are displayed in your SuperTable. See options below.

<figure><img src="/files/gE5zqvRih0vvhtczw945" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Measure styles

#### Decimals

With decimal numbers, you can set a prefix and/or a suffix to be used in the presentation in the cells of your SuperTables. The numbers will remain intact so it’s only to add extra information to the cells in SuperTables. You can also configure how negative values should be represented in your SuperTables and you can choose to enable or disable thousands separator in the display of the numbers in your cells. For instance, if your cell contains a numeric year (like 2021) it can be shown as 2,021 if you allow a thousand separator or 2021 if you disable the thousand separator.

#### Currency

The currency number formatting allows the same options as the number format, plus the option to top the currency shown in your SuperTable.

With currency, you can use a 3 letter suffix to change the currency. The default currency is USD, but you can also use for example GBP or EUR.

#### Percentage

This number formatting behaves the same as the decimal format. Your cell value will be multiplied by 100 and besides that, it adds the percentage sign to your cell formatting in SuperTables.

#### Time (ms)

When you choose this option, you can indicate what hierarchy of time must be used for your cell representation. To use this option your values must be in milliseconds (ms) and they will be automatically presented in the entire or part of the range you selected:

* Seconds
* Minutes
* Hours
* Days

### Unit

Configure the display units for when measures reach thousands, millions, billions or trillions.

<figure><img src="/files/i6VAySEKEsa7n3qaxkoQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Measure Properties

### Styles

Set the individual style of the Header and the Values in the table.

<figure><img src="/files/1O31pTeQIueLkOW4Uhj3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Colors

Set the colors for the background and header of a column, as well as the font color of the header.

<figure><img src="/files/piG8Q2g7vwTnvNuxInDs" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Hide column in sidebar

Choose this option if you wish to hide the column from the sidebar. This comes in handy when you have columns in your data that you need for SuperTables calculations but don’t want to show in your SuperTable. Using this option never allows your dashboard users to add the column to SuperTables using the Sidebar.

<figure><img src="/files/7H39LVO0IlWhZcu7J03F" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hide column in sidebar</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide header name

Ticking this will remove the column header from the SuperTable view.

<figure><img src="/files/1kn4KCgVF77abselnezl" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hide header name</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide inline filter

Hide the filter from a specific dimension. You see in our example it’s not possible to filter on Quantity but possible on Profit.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/fiY3haDILcA4xCFFtqYp" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hiding the inline filter</p></figcaption></figure>

### Hide grand total

Hide the column from showing total value. For instance you want to show the Sales total but not the quantity total in the total row of a grouped SuperTable, suppress the total from your Quantity column.

<figure><img src="/files/HmzX5c77JGRe6CDpXzMq" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hiding the grand total</p></figcaption></figure>

### Show aggregated value when grouping

Turn off aggregated values (SUM, AVG, MAX etc.) if you do not wish to see it in your view.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Show-Aggregated-Value.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### User can change aggregation method while grouping

Dashboard creators are able to restrict users to only aggregating to their chosen aggregation method.

### Aggregation Method

Using the hamburger menu alongside a column allows you to change the column aggregation (change from SUM to AVG for instance).

### Truncate Values

Truncate the measure to show a range by deciding on a minimum and maximum value.

### Alignment

Choose the alignment of the text within your SuperTables view, as well as the header of the specific column.

### Header Tooltip

Change the tooltip of your selected measure. By default, it will show the measure name. This tooltip is for the column header only.

<figure><img src="/files/5aBoUZ9TRbgS4TFgPSli" alt=""><figcaption><p>Custom header tooltip</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/7kcQvVUBY3gVW0ynxSBn" alt=""><figcaption><p>Custom header tooltip</p></figcaption></figure>

URL Action

Entering a URL will allow users to click any cell in this column to open a new tab in their web browser. You can refer to any other value from the same row of data by wrapping the field name with angle brackets. You can of course also use a dynamically calculated field that contains a dynamic URL based on the content of that specific row of data. With this, you can set URL parameters to open a dashboard that has already been filtered on specific column values in your selection.&#x20;

### Conditional color formatting

<figure><img src="/files/oHD51dm1PoU0UI2cKpHA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Color style

With this option, you can set conditional formatting. There are three options for conditional formatting:&#x20;

1. Change the font color of the cell&#x20;
2. Change the background color of the cell&#x20;
3. Change the background color of the entire row&#x20;

#### Background color

Click on the circle to open the color palette and choose the color you wish to use. Please note that you cannot configure colors for a dimension with more than 50 members.

#### Gradient

Instead of having set colors for below bound, in bound and above bound, it will gradient from below to above. Use the lower & upper bound to decide on the scope

<figure><img src="/files/xFqfrKLSq38vzKiSGB93" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Show Background As A Bar Chart

Change your cell into a bar chart, setting the minimum and maximum bounds.

<figure><img src="/files/ai6kTzSws7lup1feikaj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Use color as background color of entire row

Fill entire rows in your SuperTable by using the conditionally formatted colours of your upper and lower bounds.

<figure><img src="/files/4r5RuU3zhnw2IV3hWNcz" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Calculations Pane

SuperTables offers the possibility to create (SuperTable only) calculated fields. The extensions API transfers summary data only, so ratios and percentages are transferred as numbers instead of calculations. There is nothing wrong with that when you are presenting your data on a row level, but when you use the custom grouping options of SuperTables you will be presented aggregated values of the percentages and ratios that will not match the correct values.

To setup a calculation follow this guide: [Setting up Calculations](/supertables/guides/setting-up-calculations)

#### Aggregated calculations

This is where the SuperTables Calculated Fields come in handy. With this simple Calculation editor you can easily perform simple mathematical calculations which use operands like Add, Subtract, Divide and Multiply. So for instance, if you have Profit and Sales columns in your dataset you can create a calculated field like&#x20;

```
SUM(Profit)/SUM(Sales)
```

to calculate the Profit Ratio which will also aggregate properly when using custom groups.

#### Date calculations

There is also support for **Date** calculations. Make sure to write DATE() around the date dimension for SuperTables to recognize it as a date. For example:

```
DATE(Order Date) + ( SUM(Days of Shipping) * DAY() ) to calculate a delivery date for example.
```

#### If Else calculations

Calculations also have access to the same If-Else Formula Editor as the Formulas tab, allowing for further customization of your SuperTables measures.

<figure><img src="/files/YiYBdFIvdAx3BsQS7Z6A" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Sparklines Pane

You can now have a cell that displays a graphical overview of the data summarised at group level. All you have to do is select the type of graph, the aggregation type, the x-axis and the y-axis fields.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/uiUhn6HEV82gtCT0YbjZ" alt=""><figcaption><p>A Sparkline</p></figcaption></figure>

There are different graphical visualisation types of Sparkline:

* Area
* Line
* Bar ( Vertical )
* Bar ( Horizontal )

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Area" %}
Displays a line that connects the data points with a highlight that is shown 'under' the line to the origin ( Zero point ).

<figure><img src="/files/5Q2TJfQqGupAlLvYFTOT" alt=""><figcaption><p>Area Sparkline type</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Line " %}
This displays a line that connects the data points.

<figure><img src="/files/QbzoRBVcJswLBXUvMMkp" alt=""><figcaption><p>Line Sparkline type</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Bar ( Vertical )" %}
Displays the traditional bar chart in the vertical setting.

<figure><img src="/files/xhaajIbmvPPbnzEpWrX8" alt=""><figcaption><p>Bar ( Vertical ) Sparkline type</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Bar ( Horizontal )" %}
Displays the traditional bar chart in the horizontal setting.

<figure><img src="/files/mdN9FIAlKXAMuwKFd38g" alt=""><figcaption><p>Bar Horizontal Sparkline type</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

### How to create a Sparkline

Creating a Sparkline is an easy process as you need just four variables: Type of Sparkline( Area by default), Aggregate type, X-Axis field and the Y-Axis field. <br>

A detailed guide on how to create a Sparkline can be found in [How to create a Sparkline](/supertables/guides/how-to-create-a-sparkline) .

# Sparkline Formatting

You can customize how you want your Sparkline to look using the multiple formatting and styling options provided.

* **Hide header name -** Hides the name of the column in the SuperTables view.
* **Column header alignment -** Horizontally aligns the header text.
* **Header tooltip -** A custom tooltip you can create for the header.

### URL Action

Entering a URL will allow users to click any cell in this column to open a new tab in their web browser. You can refer to any other value from the same row of data by wrapping the field name with angle brackets. You can of course also use a dynamically calculated field that contains a dynamic URL based on the content of that specific row of data. With this, you can set URL parameters to open a dashboard that has already been filtered on specific column values in your selection.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/6m8gcae5ygnUtDjVTEyJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Sparkline styling

This is where you can assign a color to the unique properties of a Sparkline or where you can create a marker to show a data point. The styling options are unique to each type of Sparkline as these are explained below:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Area Sparkline" %}

<figure><img src="/files/55r6Xfvx0ZyQbv11z1ZA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Sparkline Date Filtering

### Creating the Date Filter

To prevent creating an overwhelming and strange looking Sparkline that includes a date field as one of its axis it is recommended to use the Date Filter panel.

<figure><img src="/files/ydTJgR6m9nkT2X92hQfU" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can either define a **Standard** **range** or a **Custom** **range.**

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Standard Range" %}

<figure><img src="/files/8yB4WvAF92BhYJcKy9y3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This uses a predefined range starting from whatever anchor point you select.

* **Time period -** The time between each data point. This can either be Day, Week, Month, Quarter and Year.
* **Number of (Time period) -** Defines how many instances of the time period chosen are selected in the axis.
* **Anchor point -** Defines where to start creating time periods from. You can choose from the current day **(Today),** the most recent data point **( Latest Data )**, or from a **Specific Date**
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Custom Range" %}

<figure><img src="/files/AYY3E6FTIJsfAA20cblZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This uses a predefined range starting from whatever anchor point you select.

* **Time period -** The time between each data point. This can either be Day, Week, Month, Quarter and Year.
* **Start Date & End Date -** Defines the starting and ending data points to create time periods between. This means the number of time periods is completely dependant on the overall time between the two data points.
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

An example of a result of using the date filter is shown below:\
\- **Using a standard range based on 12 Quarters from the Latest data point:**

<figure><img src="/files/HSvxQgfJHmAWc5ZWSyND" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/tKbeJeqPRpWW26TGInLR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Combined Columns

Combined Columns allow you to combine date of different columns into one column and style it in a beautiful way. For example an image of a Client followed by the name in bold text and a title.

#### Column List Style

<figure><img src="/files/IvTutmStoEUapNGtaASF" alt=""><figcaption><p>Column list style</p></figcaption></figure>

This is made to show an image as a first column and on the right side of the image a list of dimension values. For example the Brand, Model and Price. You can define the style per column by expanding the menu of each column added as shown in the screenshot below.

**Note: Any styles you apply in this configuration panel will overwrite the default styling set for the column added. You can reuse its default styling by selecting "Use column styling".**

The image size is set on the dimension of the image found in the dimensions section in the sidebar. Make sure this column is set to Dimension Style 'Image' so you get the options to set the image height and width.&#x20;

Configuration of above result:

<figure><img src="/files/PkRB9tlDd3mhAlpxdybw" alt=""><figcaption><p>Configuration of the Cars combined column</p></figcaption></figure>

**Note:** It is important to enable **automatic row height** in the appearance tab when using the 'Column List View' as these columns can use more space than a normal column and overflow.&#x20;

#### Inline style

With the inline style all values are set on 1 row. This gives you a beautiful 1 row combined column:

<figure><img src="/files/CcsW1rsV2yLx0AhcvHY0" alt=""><figcaption><p>Inline style</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/QdPwHOmFvOikDly8qbf1" alt="" width="510"><figcaption><p>Inline Style</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Value Column

The value column holds the value of the column. So one of the dimensions is the actual value of this column. This value is used in Grouping, Pivoting, Filtering and Export to Excel.&#x20;

### Exporting a combined column to Excel, CSV and PDF

It is important to note that when exporting the table of data with a combined column included, the **value** of the combined column is exported. For example is the combined column used above (**Cars**) is exported the following result will be displayed in all formats:<br>

<figure><img src="/files/ZAgNi3QHuhFFe0LUhMlF" alt=""><figcaption><p>Cars combined column export in both Excel and PDF</p></figcaption></figure>

As shown above, the value "Mercedes Benz" is displayed because the value column selected is **Brand** which contains "Mercedes Benz".

**Note:** **If no value column is selected, the value displayed when exported is "Make sure to select a value column" which is the placeholder to notify you the user that you did not set a value column when creating the combined column.**

# Column Groups Pane

Add column groups to your SuperTables for a more organized, streamlined, and visually customizable approach to presenting and managing your data. Create your column groups in the data configuration tab and personalize them with enhanced customisation options, including the ability to independently style the background and font colors of each header cell.

<figure><img src="/files/4pTQGOzWudoLMoQ3zGca" alt=""><figcaption><p>A column group</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Visibility

You can use the eye icons to toggle the default visiblity of the column. A blue eye icon means the column is **visible** when its group is collapsed, while a pink closed eye icon means it will be **hidden**. The column will always be visible when the column group is expanded.

<figure><img src="/files/bmwRmlWvyPH7npsCqTBA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If a dimension or measure is part of a column group, this will be displayed in the configuration tab of these values, as seen below:

<figure><img src="/files/PM6EPBDhiexXGK9UJhKX" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

After creating the column group, the columns in the group will now be nested under the group.

<figure><img src="/files/LzFDMKkYn4LzK0MIEt1t" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Actions Tab

{% hint style="info" %}
This guide is for **Tableau** only.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
To use Actions with the External Data service, an additional step is needed, which you can read about here: [Dashboard Actions and Mapping](/supertables/configuration/setting-up-supertables-with-data-service/dashboard-actions-and-mapping)
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/mL9OVcPltzwIR9GWkJIC" alt=""><figcaption><p>Configuring actions</p></figcaption></figure>

Interaction between visualizations and sheets in your dashboard is an important aspect of Tableau. SuperTables supports a high degree of interactivity by using a “Dashboard actions” like mechanism. Actions in SuperTables are based on row selection. You can either select one or multiple rows which will trigger your Dashboard Action. To start configuring the Dashboard Actions by SuperTables, click the “Actions” tab in the configure screen. In this screen you can either edit an existing action (by default, no actions are present) or create a new action. To create a new action click the pink “**Add action**” button. You will be presented a modal popup where you can configure your action.

<figure><img src="/files/cIlghN0TuAnSj4fnY5yf" alt=""><figcaption><p>Creating/Editing an action</p></figcaption></figure>

**Select action type**

SuperTables supports three types of action:

1. Filter action: This allows you to use one column value of the selected row to filter upon another sheet of your dashboard.
2. Parameter action: This will allow you to fill a parameter with the value of a column of one (or more) selected rows.
3. Highlight Action: This action allows you to highlight the value of a column of your selected row(s) in another sheet of your dashboard.
4. Hide/Show elements action: This action allows you to hide/show a floating container when selecting/deselecting a row in SuperTables. Combine it with a Filter / Parameter action to show a filtered graph when clicking on a row in SuperTables.&#x20;

**Select a column**

Choose which column will be used to execute the action. This is not the column that will trigger the execution of the action but this is the value that will be used as a filter, parameter value or highlight value in this specific action.

**Select a worksheet**

Choose the target worksheet you wish your action to trigger, SuperTables actions can be applied to one single target sheet only.

**Clearing the selection will**

Select how you want your action to behave when the (row) selection is undone. You can choose to leave the filter, show all values again or exclude all values.

**Data format**

If you use a date field as a column value to be used in your action, you can set what format you want to use as a filter value.

#### Dashboard actions with the Data Service

In the data service, you will need to select the **mapping** you made when setting up dashboard actions. This field determines which mapping is used when the action is triggered. Since a dashboard can contain multiple mappings, explicitly selecting the correct one ensures that the action corresponds to the intended data and behaves as expected.

# Multiple Layouts

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Parameter-Changes.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

SuperTable enables users to create and store multiple custom layouts for quick access. For instance, a user might arrange specific columns in a preferred order in one layout. This functionality allows users to use pre existing layouts without starting from scratch and to easily swap between layouts. Here’s a guide on how to create and store custom layouts:

#### Configuration

Firstly you will need to create two parameters of type string in your worksheet. One for storing the view and one for the layout change. Leave the value empty.

<details>

<summary>Step 1 </summary>

#### Create a parameter

First, create **two parameters of type&#x20;*****String*** in your worksheet:

1. **View parameter**
   * Data type: **String**
   * Allowable values: **All**
   * Current value: *(leave empty)*
2. **Layout parameter**
   * Data type: **String**
   * Allowable values: **List**
   * Values: leave empty for now

<figure><img src="/files/8b7x6GrYEWWcDVJDr6yj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

</details>

<details>

<summary>Step 2</summary>

#### Configure parameter in supertables

Open the **SuperTables configuration screen**. By default, you will land on the **General** tab, the one we need.

In the **Store table layout in** setting, select the **layout parameter** you created earlier. This parameter will store the selected table layout.

<figure><img src="/files/jQDMDzQBEEyDUuos8d6q" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

</details>

<details>

<summary>Step 3</summary>

#### Configure second parameter you created

Next, go to the **Appearance** tab in the SuperTables configuration screen.

Scroll down to the section **Use a parameter to switch between layouts** and enable it.\
Then select the **layout parameter** you created earlier.

<figure><img src="/files/LLSt1LQzODAw2SzIrYlT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

&#x20;

</details>

<details>

<summary>Step 4</summary>

#### Setup your dashboard - **Show the parameters**

Right-click the parameters you created and select **Show Parameter** to make them visible on the worksheet or dashboard.

All changes made in your **SuperTables** will be saved in your stored parameter. Once you have configured your SuperTable exactly as you want, copy the text shown in your **stored parameter**.

<figure><img src="/files/KRgXsdfcki4gRGcgMlqW" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

&#x20;

</details>

<details>

<summary>Step 5</summary>

#### Layout parameters

Edit the layout parameter by clicking on the dropdown on the parameter. This is where we will be creating our custom layouts.

<figure><img src="/files/cTKheLi8dc6SlGArSbMv" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Paste your layout as a value in the list and name your custom view.

<img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Adding-Stored-Layout.gif" alt="SuperTables Adding Stored Layout" data-size="original">

Repeat this process for each new custom view you wish to have on your dashboard. Once you have all the custom views you want, remove the stored layout from your dashboard. You can now click on each view and see an instant change in your SuperTable!

# Charting

Create a pop-up chart of your selection. Within your SuperTable, select some dimensions and measures, right-click and choose ‘**Chart Range**’. Here, you will be presented with a selection of charts. Click on your desired choice and you will be presented with a pop-up chart within your dashboard. This is read-only and will not be stored in your SuperTables configuration and settings. It is designed to help your Dashboard users with some extra self-service analytics on the SuperTables data.

# Layout Options

### Enable auto row height based on the contents of the cells

The height of each cell will change automatically based on the contents of the cell to show all content in the view. The row height will be calculated on the cell containing the most content (either image, text or numbers).

### Enable word wrapping

Allows long text inside cells to wrap onto multiple lines instead of being cut off or shown on one line.\
This option is available when **Enable auto row height based on the contents of the cells** is disabled.

### Row height in pixels

Set a fixed row height for the table.\
This option is available when **Enable auto row height based on the contents of the cells** is disabled.

### Vertical alignment

Choose how content is vertically aligned inside the cells.\
This helps keep the table visually consistent, especially when using custom row heights or auto row height.

### Enable sidebar

Enable the option to show or hide the sidebar in the SuperTables extension for Dashboard users. You can also individually set this option for only the

* Columns panel
* Filter panel
* Formulas panel
* [InputTables panel](https://docs.infotopics.com/inputtables/)
* [AI panel](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/ai)

### Enable status bar

This option lets you toggle the visibility of the status bar in your SuperTable. The status bar is shown in SuperTables at the bottom and holds information on the total number of rows and filtered rows.

### Always show sorting icon on all header names

Keep the ‘sorting’ icon in the header at all times when enabling this. This will show less experienced users how easy it can be to sort on each header.

### Hide Index column in the columns side panel

Enable to hide the index column in the SuperTables instance. This will prevent it from showing up in the “columns” tab of your end-users.

### Enable auto aggregation based on the visible columns in the table V2

{% hint style="info" %}
This is a **Tableau** only feature.
{% endhint %}

[Dynamic Aggregation](/supertables/features/dynamic-aggregation)

### Enable checkbox to select entire row

Adds a checkbox that allows users to select an entire row.\
This is useful when users need a clear visual way to select records in the table.

### Enable to allow multiple rows to be selected with clicks

When using devices where Ctrl and Shift is not an option, turn on this feature where each click of a row will keep all rows selected. Clicking on a selected cell will deselect the row.&#x20;

### Enable allow multiple rows to be selected

When selected, users can highlight multiple rows; when disabled, only a single row can be selected. Each selection of a new row will deselect the previous selection.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/SuperTables-Enable-multi-select.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Show button to clear all filters

Shows a button that allows users to clear all filters applied in SuperTables. Can be positioned on the top or bottom right corner.

### Enable advance inline filter

Enables advanced inline filtering directly in the table.\
This gives users more filtering options inside the column headers.

### Enable context menu in column header

When this option is enabled, a three-dot menu appears next to each column name in the header. From this menu, users can pin columns, sort ascending or descending, autosize columns, fit columns to the window, group data, choose visible columns, and expand or collapse grouped rows. This gives more flexibility while keeping the table easy to navigate.

### Enable RTL (Right to Left) layout

RTL stands for ‘Right To Left’. This gives the SuperTable users the option to rearrange their SuperTable, as it reads from right to left of the screen.

### Enable Pagination

Show pagination at the footer of your SuperTable. You can click through each page or use it to go to the last.

### Show SuperTables in a pop-up on mark selection

{% hint style="info" %}
This is a **Tableau-only** feature.
{% endhint %}

**Important**: Reload the extension after changing the pop-up settings. Choose which worksheet to trigger the pop-up. This will turn the SuperTable into a dashboard button to save that vital dashboard space and will be triggered on mark selection. Allow the pop-up only when the datasheet has data (has a negative performance impact).

# Grouping Options

**Enable Group bar**

Show or hide the grouping bar in SuperTables. This enables or disables your dashboard users to do custom groupings on the dataset you offer in your SuperTable instance.

**Enable group totals within each group level**

Each level will show a total of the group. Below, an example of the group total for “Office Supplies”:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Enable-group-totals-within-each-group-level-2.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Enable a ‘grand’ total across all groups**

Show a grand total of all groups in your SuperTable view.

View grand total at the top of the table

Show the grand total (pinned) at the top of your SuperTable view.

**Enable Group aggregation filtering**

By default, column filters are not applied to cell values shown in Group Rows as they do not usually have any data of their own. However when using Aggregation, group rows will show aggregated values computed based on their child rows. You can filter the grid based on the group row aggregated values by enabling this setting.

**When Group is expanded, hide the parent row**

SuperTables allows you to hide the parent row while drilling down in your table. Below, an example with the parent row enabled:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/When-Group-is-expanded-hide-the-parent-row-Disabled.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Also an example with this option set to hide the parent row:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/When-Group-is-expanded-hide-the-parent-row.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Note: Enabling this option automatically disables "Enable sticky group rows" and "Enable sticky group total rows" options as they are mutually exclusive.**

**Enable sticky row groups**

This option will make the group rows stick to the top of the table when scrolling down, meaning that the parent row of a group will remain visible while scrolling through the underlaying rows. Enabling this option disables the "When group is expanded, hide the parent row" option.

**Enable sticky group total rows**

This option will make the group total rows will stick to the top/bottom of the table when scrolling. Enabling this option disables the "When group is expanded, hide the parent row" option.

**Hide the number of rows counter behind a group row**

Normally, SuperTables shows the number of rows contained in a group or aggregation. With this switch you can turn off this row counter. By default, SuperTables shows a row counter when grouping:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/SuperTables-Hide-the-number-of-rows-counter-behind-a-group-row-disabled.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can switch this off and then the SuperTable groupings look like this:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/SuperTables-Hide-the-number-of-rows-counter-behind-a-group-row-enabled.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Use multiple columns for grouping**

When you use the grouping bar, SuperTables uses one column for the group by default. With this option, you can force SuperTables to use a dedicated column for each member of the grouping hierarchy. Example: Below you see a custom group of “Category” and “Sub category” where there is also a separate column for “Sub category”:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Use-multiple-columns-for-grouping-Enabled.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Default SuperTables combines the grouped dimensions into one column called “Group”:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Use-multiple-columns-for-grouping-Disabled.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Show opened group names on the rows below**

This is useful when the user scrolls down through the children of the group, and the row showing what group was opened is scrolled out of view.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/SuperTables-Open-Groups.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Show aggregation function in header**

When using Measures in your SuperTable, the aggregation of the column can be shown in the SuperTable column header using this switch:

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/SuperTables-Show-aggregation-function-in-header.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Automatically expand grouped rows**

If your SuperTables has multiple groups, you can set it to open on a specified level by default. If you have, for instance, 3 group levels, you can choose to expand it by default on the first level by setting this value to 2.

**Group value empty or null**

Replace the empty group or null with a message of your choice, leave empty for default.

**Enable URL actions for grouped values**

If you are using dynamic values in the URL it will use the first row found in the grouped data to generate the URL. Deselecting will deactivate the URL action on the grouped level.

**Unbalanced Groups**

If there are rows containing null or undefined values for the column that is being grouped then these rows will not be grouped. This is called unbalanced grouping. If the null values should be in a column that’s current in your dataset you can set a replacement column using the dropdown. Wherever there are nulls or undefigned values, this column will be used for all.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/SuperTables-Unbalanced-Groups.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Hide expand icon for empty group rows

When enabled, SuperTables will automatically hide the expand/collapse icon for group rows that do not contain any child records.

This option is especially useful when working with unbalanced hierarchies, as it prevents users from attempting to expand groups that have no underlying data.

**Enabled**

```
▶ Project A  Project B
```

In this example:

* **Project A** contains child rows and displays the expand icon.
* **Project B** has no child rows and therefore does not display an expand icon.

#### **Event listeners**

Here, you can choose on what events the SuperTable should be updated from the dashboard&#x20;

**Update when any Tableau filter or Dashboard action changed the datasheet**

Your SuperTable will be updated (reloaded) when any filter or dashboard action changed the datasheet.

**When using secondary datasources to blend on your datasheet, they will by default not trigger filter updates. You can select these worksheets here.**

Use the dropdown to choose the secondary datasource. This worksheet will need to be present on your dashboard.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/SuperTables-Secondary-Data.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Update on a mark selection in the datasheet**

Your SuperTable will be updated on a mark selection in the datasheet that feeds the extension.

**Update when the value of a parameter changes**

Your SuperTable will be updated when the value of a parameter changes.

**Exclude the following parameters from the event listener**

In some use cases you might want your SuperTables extension to respond to parameter changes, but not to all parameter. For instance, when you have two SuperTables instances on the same dashboard that have their settings stored in a parameter, you might want your SuperTable to exclude to respond on that settings parameter changes.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/rckRN6mUJghU6fyJB7ah" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Pivoting options

**Enable Pivot Header**

Show or hide column headers when in Pivot mode.

**Enable row total columns for each value at end of pivot table**

Enable or disable row total columns for each value at the end of the pivot table.

**Pivot column is date**

If a column header in your pivot table is a date, you can format it’s appearance here.

### Custom notification options

A message will be shown within your SuperTables if there’s an empty datasheet. Dashboard designers can determine what message will be shown. This can be a clear message to explain how to connect data or even if you wish to have a message shown in a different language.

# Event listeners

This page describes how to configure event listeners

### Update when the value of a parameter changes

This option adds a listener to the selected parameters. Whenever a parameter value changes and triggers an event, the grid is automatically refreshed to reflect the updated state.

### \[Data Service] Update on mark selections from

This option allows users to configure listeners for mark selections from native Tableau visualisations to SuperTables. It is a multi-select field that lets users choose one or more sheets available in the dashboard. Any selection made on these sheets will trigger a filter action, provided that the appropriate mapping is configured in the column mapping settings.

# Accessibility

#### Enhanced accessibility mode

With enhanced accessibility mode all rows and columns will be rendered in the HTML for screen readers even the rows and columns which are not visible on the screen. Animations will be disabled when using enhanced mode. **NOTE:** Accessibility mode will have a negative impact on performance. To improve performance we recommend using the pagination option, you can follow our GIF to activate this.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/SuperTables-Layout.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Theme Tab

Your dashboards are about to look even better! Our most recent upgrade of SuperTables allows creators to match their SuperTables extension to their dashboards branding. Color your headers, text, borders and background to the theme you and your users recognize! All settings can be saved in the general workbook settings or in a parameter (this can be chosen in the appearance tab of the configuration screen).

<figure><img src="/files/jAfSVhxm1yd44eqto7oY" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Packaged themes

A brand new tab is available for all your theming needs. Open the configuration screen of SuperTables and head to the Theme tab. By default SuperTables will have a Tableau look, you can change the whole style by using our pre-made themes such as Modern and Compact modes in both Light and Dark. Compact mode, as you can imagine, will compact your view, ideal to get all your columns and rows as visible as possible. Why not use one of the set themes as a starting point to then tweak to your liking?

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Packaged-Themes.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Compact Mode**

Enabling compact mode will reduce line, height and cell spacing, a good way to save that valuable space. Compact mode will work when auto cell height is enabled too!

**Tableau Fonts**

Inherit fonts from Tableau workbook setting. This will use the font configured for worksheets in workbook formatting. This works from Tableau 2021.4 and higher)

#### Colorize your SuperTable

The new theming tab allows you to individually color segments of your SuperTable, from all the borders, headers and backgrounds to just the text color. Use the color palette alongside each option to choose your color from the palette or use HEX codes and RGB color values. See our GIF to show how easy it to transform the look!

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Colorise.gif" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Restrictions Tab

Use the this tab to decide what the users will be able to do once you publish your dashboard to Tableau Server or Online. By default, there are no restrictions set in SuperTables. If you decide it is better for your use case to restrict people from some of the SuperTables functions, you can set it up in this configuration. screen.

#### **User can anonymize data**

You can either allow or deny your Dashboard users to use the Anonymize function of SuperTables.

#### **User can adjust column width**

When creating a pixel perfect dashboard, you might want to fix the column widths in your SuperTable. This option prevents your dashboard users from changing the column width.

#### **User can order of columns**

Some use cases require a strict order of the columns in your SuperTable. This option helps you maintain that order by preventing the dashboard users to change the column order in your SuperTable.

#### **User can sort columns**

Some use cases require a strict sorting of the columns in your SuperTable. This option helps you maintain that sorting by preventing the dashboard users to change the column sorting in your SuperTable.

#### **User can copy data**

The great thing of SuperTables is that you diminish the demand for working with Excel. However, SuperTables allows users to copy selections of rows/cells to the clipboard by default. This option can prevent your users to copy the data of SuperTables to the clipboard.

#### **User can export data**

SuperTables allows Dashboard Users to export the (filtered) data to Excel or CSV files by default. If your use case needs to restrict this export you can use this option to restrict the Dashboard users from exporting the data.

#### User can use switch to pivot mode

This options helps you restrict the end user from being to switch the table modes between the normal table and pivot table. This means you can set the mode to whatever you desire and maintain that mode after publishing by removing the "Pivot mode" UI button from the column sidebar for the end-user not to see.

# Tooltip Tab

The Advanced Tooltip Function is a powerful and versatile feature designed to augment your SuperTables dashboards. This function enriches your data exploration experience by providing interactive and customizable tooltips that can follow the mouse cursor or remain fixed. With a wide range of options for customization, it allows you to tailor the tooltips according to your specific needs and preferences.

Follow this guide to setup a tooltip: [How to make tool tips](/supertables/guides/how-to-make-tool-tips)

#### Tooltip limitations

Tooltips are supported in standard (non-pivot) table mode.

When **Pivot mode** is enabled, tooltips are **not available**. This is expected behavior because pivoting restructures the underlying data into dynamically generated cells, which no longer have a direct one-to-one mapping to the original Tableau rows required for tooltips.

When **Group mode** is enabled, tooltips work only on **expanded rows** in non-pivot mode. Tooltips are not shown on collapsed group rows.

If tooltips are required, we recommend using standard table mode or ensuring groups are expanded and Pivot mode is disabled.

# Export Tab

Here you can decide what will be exported and how it will be formatted when exporting your SuperTable.

<figure><img src="/files/WZhpi7FjuqTgXo3I59P6" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### **Floating export buttons**

Add buttons to the bottom section of SuperTables that allow for easy exporting of the current view to Excel, CSV or PDF.

#### Export button display type

Select the way you want the export buttons to be displayed in the table, either in a drop down menu or as an icon.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Show button as icon" %}
This displays the export buttons as icons.

<figure><img src="/files/eoeQZfmExLflg0WZwSRA" alt=""><figcaption><p>Icon mode for export buttons</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Show button in dropdown menu" %}
This displays the export button in a dropdown menu.

<figure><img src="/files/Y5tVdol6hJuRIUQtFQEC" alt=""><figcaption><p>Dropdown menu mode for export buttons</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

#### **Differentiate between even and odd rows**

Use the row banding when you do an export to Excel.

#### **The first line are column header names**

Export the column header names as a first row in the export.

#### **Include header column grouping**

If you use grouping, you can choose to include the header of the column grouping in your export.

#### **Include group rows**

When using the grouping option, you can decide if you want to include grouped rows as well in your export.

#### **Export visible columns only**

In SuperTables you can show/hide columns, this option allows you to export visible columns only or use all available columns.

#### **Export all rows except last level**

If you want your users to prevent to export the lowest member of your groupings, you can use this option. The row level data will not be exported because the export only contains the aggregated data of your grouping structure.

#### **Format exported values (CSV files)**

In the DATA tab of configuration you can set the formatting of your measures. This option allows you to include this formatting in your export, or use the raw data without the formatting on the Configuration | DATA pane. SuperTables will not export the formatting of the table in your dashboard because this is only about the formatted values in the export.

#### **Include formatting in copied values**

In the DATA tab of configuration you can set the formatting of your measures. This option allows you to include or exclude this formatting when you copy selected cells (or rows) to the clipboard using the context menu (context menu can be accessed by using a right mouse click)

<figure><img src="/files/4UxUkRgr1TEaOajn5aOh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### **Export Name**

Change the default file name when exporting to CSV or Excel. By default (no changes), the extension will be “export.xlsx” for Excel and “export.csv” for CSV exports. You can change the default filename and the file extension. For example, Newfilename – Newfilename.txt. If you want a dynamic export name, you can store the export filename in a parameter in Tableau and use the "Use parameter value" option to choose a parameter as the export value.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/OB3rjAytfn4GBpFMQTs7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### **Limit Exporting**

Limit the amount of rows allowed exporting. This will export only the top amount of rows you decide on.

## Enterprise Only

<figure><img src="/files/uBpSsm6Refix75cxvJ5G" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### **Logging Options(Enterprise Only)**

Audit export and copy actions in SuperTables in a log file on the server where SuperTables is hosted. The log file will be found in the folder where the SuperTables binary is running. Log rows exist out of: Who, When, What (Number of Rows, Number of Columns), Type (Export, Copy), Dashboard, Workbook.

#### **Set usernames(Enterprise Only)**

Select a worksheet and column containing the username(). enable/disable audit on export and audit on copy. To create the user name you can create a calculated field and name it ‘Username’ with the calculation ‘USERNAME()’ Drag this to the marks pane of your datasheet.

#### Export Image

SuperTables enterprise enables you to export images that are present in your table to Excel. Click the include images in export option to enable this functionality.

<figure><img src="/files/kEN2viPttTPV9dYf52a5" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Note: Only PDF does not support text styles. This means any text styles set for both the column header and column values such as BOLD, ITALICS etc in the SUperTables view will not be included in the PDF export.**

# AI

Before configuring AI features in SuperTables, make sure that **WriteBackExtreme is connected** and that the required AI configuration has been completed in the WriteBackExtreme Management Console.

AI functionality in SuperTables depends on two configuration steps in WriteBackExtreme:

1. **Model configuration** – Connecting an AI provider and defining model behavior
2. **Agent configuration** – Linking the model to the Summaries & Highlights and Generative Fill features

These steps only need to be completed once by an administrator. After that, AI features can be fully setup

### Configure AI features in SuperTables

The steps below describe how to enable and configure AI features in SuperTables. The configuration flow is the same for both **Summarize** and **Generative Fill**.

***

#### Step 1 – Open the SuperTables configuration

1. Open your dashboard in **Tableau**.
2. Select the **SuperTables** extension.
3. Click **Configure** to open the extension settings.
4. Navigate to the **AI** tab.

The AI tab shows the available AI features supported by SuperTables.

<figure><img src="/files/7INCAnkwIQSAWTXcWTqL" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

***

#### Step 2 – Select an AI agent

Each AI feature in SuperTables must be linked to an AI agent.

**Summarize**

1. In the AI configuration menu, select **Summarize**.
2. Under **AI Agent**, choose **Summaries & Highlights** from the dropdown.

This agent is responsible for generating summaries and highlighting notable findings.

<figure><img src="/files/wfS7rtIOHLQ5WdSdqbkN" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Generative Fill**

1. Select **Generative Fill** in the AI configuration menu.
2. Under **AI Agent**, choose **Generative Fill** from the dropdown.

This agent is responsible for generating and filling values based on table data and schema rules.

<figure><img src="/files/zwUn2f0QB1qZ97NFEyOU" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

***

#### Step 3 – Configure the system prompt (optional)

Each AI feature allows you to customize the **System Prompt**.

The system prompt is applied to all AI requests for the selected feature and can be used to:

* Set the tone and style of responses
* Define formatting guidelines
* Provide additional context (for example: role, language, or level of detail)

> **Note**\
> The AI agents already include a default system prompt. Any text entered here is **added on top of** the existing prompt and extends the default behavior rather than replacing it.

You can leave the system prompt empty to use the default behavior.

***

#### Step 4 – Save the configuration

1. After selecting the AI agent and adjusting the system prompt, click **Save**.
2. Repeat the steps for the other AI feature if needed.

Once saved, AI features are enabled and ready for use in SuperTables.

# About Tab

Here, you will find which version of SuperTables you are using along with the changelog of all the updates from previous versions. Support email and the Infotopics | Apps for Tableau website link are also available in [here](https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/).

# Setting up SuperTables with Data Service

This guide lets you get started with SuperTables with server side processing for large data sets.

SuperTables primarily relies on the Tableau Extensions API to retrieve summary data. As a result, most processing occurs on the client side, and all data is loaded at once. To address performance limitations with large datasets, we are introducing a new approach that leverages server-side processing. This significantly reduces client-side load and improves scalability. To use this feature, users must be on **SuperTables version 6.x.x or later** and **WriteBackExtreme version 6.x.x or later**.

### Setting up a data source.&#x20;

These steps require you to create a semantic model in the WriteBackExtreme environment. You can follow this guide here to create a semantic model in WriteBackExtreme [Semantic modeling](/writebackextreme/features/management-console/semantic-modeling)

<figure><img src="/files/a8MiD0p1BSlZOW1rFm4c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

In the general tab, select **External Data Service** and then click on the **Configure** button to log into WriteBack Extreme, and connect to a data source. &#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/ObMmnzyk52D2QkIK4Mvb" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Please contact your WriteBackExtreme administrator for the login URL and credentials.&#x20;

#### Connecting to a Data Source

In this step, you can connect to a semantic model created in WriteBackExtreme. Click on the dropdown below, select the data source to connect to a Data Source.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/R1JMb6Qu8AT7uDLeI3bF" alt="" width="334"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Once a data source is connected, a list of all available columns is displayed. When the data source loads for the first time, all columns are disabled by default. Users can select only the columns they require, and this selection can be modified at any time from the Columns sidebar.

For very large datasets, loading all columns at once can negatively impact performance, so selecting only the necessary columns is recommended.

<figure><img src="/files/Irm8asx4xNHiPmznZ0S8" alt="" width="335"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Auto aggregation**

SuperTables with Data Service also support dynamic aggregation based on the visible columns in the table. This is a processing-intensive but very useful feature. When enabled, the data is aggregated based on the currently visible columns.

For example, if only **Category** and **Sales** are visible, the table displays unique categories with the sum of sales. If **Category**, **Region**, and **Sales** are visible, the table shows sales aggregated by category per region.

When this option is disabled, non-aggregated data is passed directly from the database to the grid.

#### Export limitations when using the External Data Service

When **External Data Service (WriteBackExtreme)** is selected as the data fetching method, **export options (CSV, XLS, PDF)** are intentionally disabled.

This behavior is **by design** for the following reasons:

**Performance**

* The External Data Service is typically used for **very large datasets**.
* Exporting large datasets directly from the extension could lead to **performance issues or very large file downloads**.

**Security**

* The data service provides **direct access to backend data sources**.
* Allowing unrestricted export could expose **large portions of the underlying dataset**, which may not be intended.

Because of this, export functionality is only available when using **Tableau Datasheet-based loading methods**, where Tableau controls the dataset size.

# Dashboard Actions and Mapping

We need to establish a connection between Tableau data and WriteBack Extreme semantic models to ensure that dashboard actions and filters work correctly and are translated properly between the two.

As mentioned in the previous section, with the introduction of the Data Service, SuperTables no longer rely on data from the Extensions API. Since the data now comes from two different sources within the same dashboard, we need to establish mapping relationships to correctly translate dashboard actions and filters between Tableau and the semantic model, using the column mapping feature.&#x20;

#### Column mapping

Filter column mapping acts as a dictionary, translating column names while performing actions from Tableau to SuperTables and the other way around. A SuperTables column can be mapped to multiple sheet columns if needed.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/7b9bMnB66D1dMXzR5jg2" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

First, select a SuperTables column from the first dropdown, then select a Tableau column that has been added to a sheet. You can also type in the field to make searching easier. The dropdown supports multiple selections.

Once added, the mappings will appear in the **All Mappings** section below. You can click the trash bin icon to remove a mapping. If all mappings associated with a SuperTables column are deleted, the entire row is removed automatically.

<figure><img src="/files/wda8oiaODW5yAEKoJ2F2" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

It is also possible to add a manual mapping entry. For example, if a sheet does not currently contain any data but the columns are already defined, the extension may not be able to fetch those columns. Similarly, if you expect a new column to be added later, you can create a manual mapping in advance.

To do this, click the **Manage** button in the **All Mappings** section, then enter the column name you want to map to the corresponding SuperTables column.

#### Dashboard actions

In the data service, you will need to select the **mapping** you made when setting up dashboard actions. This field determines which mapping is used when the action is triggered. Since a dashboard can contain multiple mappings, explicitly selecting the correct one ensures that the action corresponds to the intended data and behaves as expected.

Examples:

```
DATE(Order Date) - DATE(Delivery Date)
```

Or when using a number:

```
DATE(Order Date) + (SUM(Nr of Shipping Days) * DAY())
```

Numbers are by default in seconds. Therefore we added multiple helpers:![](/files/uXNTaonl3nNAuqhFmEKt)

{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

#### Target Column

The column you use to color the column. The target column can be any other column. You can use one column to color another.

#### Color bounds

1. Lower Bound: The minimum value, anything value in column that is below this value will be colored with below bounds color.
2. Upper Bound: The maximum value, anything value in column that is above this value will be colored with below bounds color.
3. Below-Bounds Color: Color used to color values lower than or equal to lower bound.
4. Above-Bounds Color: Color used to color values higher than or equal to Upper bound.
5. In-bounds Color: Color used to color values between lower and upper bound.

#### Using a gradient

By default conditional coloring uses discrete values for upper, in and lower bounds but turning this option on will convert discrete coloring to gradient (continuous) resulting from lower bound to upper bound.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/2vnGCqzK2qHjPaKVTPzD" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Custom font color

You can also assign a custom color to your font. The default color is b**lack**

{% tab title="Viz extension" %}
To open the configuration panel, simply click 'Format extension' in the Marks pane.

<figure><img src="/files/xwZgjTFwnF4RM4iU6ghd" alt="" width="247"><figcaption><p>Opening the configuration panel in Viz extensions</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

#### Step 2: Navigate to the Tooltip tab

<figure><img src="/files/dgXHNo06A9svz03ZM6Tu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Step 3: Click make a new tooltip

On the left side of the Tooltip tab. There is a button that says make a new tooltip. Click make a new tooltip on there.

<figure><img src="/files/F4z31zFEa7y37EkjBdiY" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Step 4: Make your tooltip

Choose the location of your tooltip first, for the purpose of this guide we are going to use visible on all columns(row tooltip) but you can also make the tool tip only visible on specific oclumns.

<figure><img src="/files/CWCvmyfpWgcJYURJBody" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Configure your tooltip**

<figure><img src="/files/xjTPc5wbpNlGoiQxcQ0H" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Our tooltip creator uses a familiar rich text editor style for formatting the text inside of the tooltip.

**1:** Adding a column name or value to your tool tip: Type '**$**' to display the current cell's name and value in the tooltip when you hover over the cell. For example, '**$Column Name**: **$Column Value**' will display the cell's column name and value in the tooltip when you hover over the cell.<br>

**2:** Inserting a specific column: Type '**@**' followed by a column name to display the column value in the Tooltip. For instance, '**Profit Ratio: @Profit Ratio**' will replace **@Profit Ratio** with the actual value of the Profit Ratio column.

**3:** Coloring your text: You can use the right most color picker to color your text a specific color.

**4:** Inserting images: Your tooltip can also contain images. This can be done by clcikign the image icon.

<figure><img src="/files/ePOGakoRUZmXonsTmaTJ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Additional Options

On the main screen there are general options for tooltips that apply to all of the tooltips. These options determine the appearance and style of the tooltip.

<figure><img src="/files/XuDMG57sr59uYTaFisSv" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Let tooltip follow mouse**: Clicking on the makes the tooltip follow the mouse instead of appear and remaing stationary.

**Make tooltip interactive:** Selecting this option allows the user to copy text inside of the tooltip.

**Padding**: Determines padding of the tooltip.

**Font Size**: Font size of all the text inside of the tooltip by default 12px. You can also change the font text size of each separately by highlighting the text and then using the font size dropdown menu to change the font size value.

**Font weight**: Determines the boldness of the text inside the tootip by default something.

**Background Color**: Determines the background color of the tooltip, by default white.

**Font Color**: Determines the Font color of the tooltip, by default black.

**Border Color**: Determines the Border color of the tooltip, by default grey.

# Selective Aggregation

In SuperTables you can use selective aggregation to aggregate only certain rows based on a condition. Selective aggregation instead of aggregating over all rows in a group, it aggregates based only on rows where a column has valid values, by using a flag system that can be setup by the user to determine valid values. 1 for valid values and 0 for invalid values.

&#x20;To set up selective aggregation in SuperTables, follow these instructions:

1. **Prepare Your Worksheet**: Ensure your worksheet contains atleast one column with values (e.g., 1s for rows to aggregate and 0s for rows to leave unaggregated).
2. **Set the Column as a Dimension**: Configure this column as a dimension in Tableau, and set its data type to "String".
3. **Open SuperTables Configuration**: Navigate to the SuperTables configuration settings.
4. **Assign the Aggregation Flag Column**: Select the column you want to apply selective aggregation to, and set the "Column Flag" to the column with 1s and 0s.
5. **Set Aggregation Type**: For the measure you want to aggregate, choose the "Selective Aggregation" option under the aggregation type.
6. **Apply to Multiple Columns**: Repeat the steps for multiple columns if needed, following the same process.

The video below explains the whole process for 1 column but selective aggregation can be used with multiple columns.

# Wildcard search in any group

When working with inline filters, a common requirement arises: enabling users to search across all levels within a hierarchical structure. In scenarios where there are multiple nested levels—such as the 15-level hierarchy in question—it becomes limiting when only one level can be filtered at a time, as shown in the current implementation.

A practical use case highlights this challenge: users might want to search for a specific term like "Person A" without needing to know which hierarchy level contains that value. Ideally, the filtering experience should be seamless and level-agnostic for the end user.

Below workbook contains an example that solves this challenge based on a Tableau Parameter and Tableau filter on the datasheet.

**Note: When you choose a field of type Date on one of the axis it is recommended to use the Date Filter function. The guide about Date Filtering can be found in** [Sparkline Date Filtering](/supertables/configuration/configuration-screen/data-tab/sparklines-pane/sparkline-date-filtering)

#### Step 5: Click 'Apply' to save and create the Sparkline

<figure><img src="/files/KS0NQ7IURtU9hqsPuHys" alt=""><figcaption><p>Displaying the Sparkline</p></figcaption></figure>

**Note: The Sparkline will only be rendered when a different field is added to the row group. It will not render when grouping is done using one of the fields already configured for the Y or X axis.**

### General tips

* When using a Sparkline it is recommended to increase the **Row height** to clearly display the Sparkline as shown in the screenshot in [#step-5-click-apply-to-save-and-create-the-sparkline](#step-5-click-apply-to-save-and-create-the-sparkline "mention")
* When using a field of type Date, it is recommended to enable the Date filter configurator to configure what dates can be used in the axis. This results in the Sparkline looking neater especially when using the Line and Area Sparkline types.

# Custom Portal integration

In this guide we show you how to create a custom portal integration with export buttons and redo/undo capabilities.

This guide is written for customers that embed a SuperTables in a custom portal and want to utilize the powerful features of SuperTables from the portal interface like exporting to Excel.

# Accessibility FAQ

SuperTables has a mode for enhanced accessibility and Using enhanced accessibility mode, all rows and columns will be rendered in DOM, even the rows and columns which are not visible on the screen. Following are the questions you might get if you use tools like axe dev tools to assess the accessibility of SuperTables.

<details>

<summary>Why does my page not have a level one heading?</summary>

***ARIA Rule : Page must contain a level-one heading***&#x20;

Generally, it is a best practice to ensure that the beginning of a page’s main content starts with an **h1** element, and to ensure that the page contains only one **h1** element. However, ARIA Standards also mention that in the case of iframes, the heading can be an <**h2**> or <**h3**> so we have added an invisible heading, which tells the screen readers that it is the SuperTables container.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why certain elements do not have an ARIA parent role?</summary>

***ARIA Rule: For every column header ARIA parent role must be added.***&#x20;

By default, SuperTables has a column header’s role described as role=”columnheader” - element containing a column header. For all the member cells there is an ARIA-Describe By tag which explains where it belongs. &#x20;

However, even though all aria tags have been applied to the necessary elements, some screen readers have trouble navigating the tags when the grid structure gets more complex (eg. grouped columns). This is the reason why there are some limitations in announcing the correct column names.

</details>

<details>

<summary>I cannot find the landmarks for some elements?</summary>

***Aria Rule: landmarks to element***&#x20;

Navigating a web page is far simpler for screen reader users if the content splits between multiple high-level sections. Content outside of sections is difficult to find and the content’s purpose may be unclear. However, in this case, SuperTables stand as one single element instead of website where contents are spread of multiple sections.

All elements in SuperTables have a role attribute which describes what it is, see the image below. &#x20;

[![SuperTables Role Attribute](https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Role-Attribute.png)](https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Role-Attribute.png)

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does the SuperTables element in the screen have an identifier? </summary>

***ARIA Rule: A Main landmark should be available in the SuperTables structure***

Screen reader users can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate directly to the first h1, which, in principle, should allow them to jump directly to the main content of the web page. If there is no h1 or if the h1 appears somewhere other than at the start of the main content, screen reader users must listen to more of the web page to understand its structure, wasting valuable time. To tackle this issue we have added an invisible heading which will help the screen reader to easily recognize the SuperTables container. &#x20;

</details>

<details>

<summary>How do I optimize SuperTables for accessibility? </summary>

***ARIA Rule: configuration option to enable/disable Accessibility optimization for the grid***&#x20;

You can use the “Enhanced accessibility option” if you wish to optimize SuperTables for accessibility.  It in general disables the column and row virtualization. This as result generates all cells in the DOM thereby you will see a considerable reduction in performance. &#x20;

There may be 2 scenarios when you may wish to disable column virtualization (if you prefer).&#x20;

1\) [Auto-sizing](https://www.ag-grid.com/javascript-grid-resizing/#auto-size-columns) of all columns. This will ensure that all columns, and not just the columns which are rendered on the screen, will be resized.&#x20;

2\) Support for a11y. This is to prevent any potential issues with keyboard navigation and screen readers (https\://[www.a11yproject.com](https://www.a11yproject.com/)/).&#x20;

</details>

<details>

<summary>Accessibility audit shows missing ‘Main roles’ which helps users to skip sections. </summary>

***Aria Rule: Bypass repeated blocks by setting the role to “Main”***&#x20;

Since websites often display secondary, repeated content on multiple pages (such as navigation links, heading graphics, and advertising frames), keyboard-only users benefit from faster, more direct access to the primary content on a page. This reduces keystrokes and minimizes associated physical pain. Since SuperTables is just one page and there are navigation shortcuts to move around. This does not affect the accessibility of SuperTables. &#x20;

</details>

<details>

<summary>Are there other general limitations to accessibility in SuperTables? </summary>

***Navigation to pinned rows/columns***&#x20;

Screen readers assume that the visual and DOM element order are identical. Specifically, when you pin a row/column, it causes elements to be rendered in different containers. This is why you cannot use screen readers to navigate into pinned row/column cells, as in fact, this means they’re rendered in a different element from the rest of the columns/rows which are scrollable.&#x20;

***Limitations announcing the correct column name in grouped columns***&#x20;

Even though all aria tags have been applied to the necessary elements, some screen readers have trouble navigating the tags when the grid structure gets more complex (eg. grouped columns). This is the reason why there are some limitations in announcing the correct column names.&#x20;

***No announcements of state change of a grid cell or grid header***&#x20;

Some screen readers will not recognize changes that happen to an element that is currently focused (including children of this element). So in order to detect changes (eg. sorted state, updated labels, etc…), you will need to move focus to another element and back.&#x20;

<br>

<details>

<summary>Why is my comment text in Supertables showing as one continuous block without line breaks?</summary>

To display line breaks, bold text, titles, and other formatting in Supertables, follow these steps:

1. Enable the **Rich Text (WYSIWYG)** editor for the comment field in WriteBackExtreme. This allows you to enter formatted content with line breaks.![](https://docs.infotopics.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F3888808431-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252FMzOBMgQCQmnHEY9CGpbe%252Fuploads%252F3Wd0naga8shxyX3EJVGn%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D8919bbf4-a3c9-40fc-b6ba-96c804a69acf\&width=300\&dpr=4\&quality=100\&sign=8aadb420\&sv=2)

# Release Notes

## WriteBackExtreme 4.0

<https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/topic/releases/writebackextreme-4-0-has-launched/>

### User Roles for Management Console

Introducing User Roles enables you to specify the role assigned to each user, thereby allowing you to control their actions within the management console. For instance, the Schema Manager is granted permission solely to oversee their respective schemas. The roles introduced include Schema Manager, Connection Manager, User Manager, and Administrator.

### Groups based access for connections

By implementing group-based connections, you can determine which groups are granted access to specific connections. In the Management Console, users will only see their assigned connections and schemas. This feature helps with a seamless integration of WriteBackExtreme within your organization, ensuring that departments are not exposed to each other’s connections and schemas.

### Multi site support for Tableau User Sync and more

We’ve incorporated the ability to choose multiple sites from your Tableau Server when synchronizing users with WriteBackExtreme. This allows you to mirror the existing structure on your Tableau Server. In cases where you’re syncing from multiple sites, group names will now carry a prefix corresponding to the site name.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/tableau-user-sync-1024x549.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### New bulk import with support for Excel files

We have entirely revamped the bulk import module within the extension. Now, you have the flexibility to choose any Excel file for import. This enhanced bulk import module facilitates the mapping of Excel columns to the appropriate columns in WriteBackExtreme. We have also enhanced the feedback mechanism for identifying missing cells or incorrect values, ensuring a smoother import process.

### A fresh look & feel (Extension)

We understand space is an issue in dashboards. Therefore we optimized the whole extension and made it more compact / dense. Besides that we added many new options to change the layout of the table, form and collaboration addon. You can find all the new options in the upgraded form builder. We are curious which new UI improvements you can find!

### More insights in user activity

We already have the ability to look at changes/history of a record in the extension and we expanded this capability with insights in the Management Console. Visit the new Audits page in the management console or look at the audits tab when you view a schema in the management console. There are filters to help you find the audit record(s) you are looking for.

### Preview Data in Management Console

With the new preview data feature you can browse the data in your schema directly in the management console. You can use this to understand what data is in the schema. There is an option to impersonate a user which can support you to enable Row Level Security.

### Data Correction enhancements

Data Correction got a massive update, we added full writeback capabilities to this module. With the new + button you can easily add a new record without the need to select a Tableau datapoint. We also added the option to remove a record. Besides that we changed the interface drastically with a new table layout and other alignment and UX enhancements. Data Correction will use less space and gives you all the freedom to create an excel-like experience in your dashboard.

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/new-layout-1-2-1024x582.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Select which datasources to refresh

We added the ability to select which datasources you want to refresh after a WriteBack action. This will improve performance significantly as you are no longer refreshing unneeded datasources. Select any datasource present in the dashboard you like, even datasources which have no relation with WriteBackExtreme!

<figure><img src="https://appsfortableau.infotopics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/select-datasources-2-1024x643.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Changelog

To view the latest updates for WriteBackExtreme, please check our [changelog](https://dl.infotopics.com/changelog/writeback-extreme).

# Architecture

We have created an image to show the infrastructure of the WriteBackExtreme extension. This shows what actually happens when you call in your WriteBackExtreme extension to your dashboard.

When the dashboard loads the extension, Tableau connects to the WriteBackExtreme Extension Server. This server provides the required JavaScript, HTML and CSS so the extension can render inside the dashboard. All rendering happens on the **client side** (Tableau Desktop or browser).\
Write-back actions, however, are handled by the Extension Server through API calls.

To use WriteBackExtreme you need a Repository Database (supported database types are listed below), as well as a connection to the database where the WriteBackExtreme data will be stored. In most cases this is already part of your existing infrastructure—your standard data sources used for Tableau reporting.

Whitelisting/Safelisting of the Extension Server URL needs to be done on Tableau Server/Tableau Online to allow communication with the extension server for users visiting your published dashboard. Communication with the WriteBackExtreme extension server will only take place from the client side (whether it is Tableau Desktop or a visitor of a published workbook in the browser). As already mentioned, rendering of the extension will also take place in the dashboard (client side).

### WriteBackExtreme  On-premise

<figure><img src="/files/LatkClOFI6KaDSBFVck1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Where does the write back data live?

WriteBackExtreme can connect to multiple databases, depending on the connections you configure in the Management Console. The **Connections** tab in the management console shows which database drivers are available. If you need a driver that is not listed, please contact support.

Write-back data is stored in the databases that already exist in your own infrastructure—the same data sources commonly used in your Tableau environment. When you create DATA Helper or ADD Data schemas, the extension automatically creates the required tables in your selected database. Any changes you make to the schema in the Management Console will also update the corresponding tables. Because this process is fully automated, we strongly recommend **not** modifying these tables manually, and instead to do all changes through the Management console of the extension.

If you want to change data that already exists in your own tables, you can use the **DATA Correction** module. This module connects directly to your existing database tables and does not create new ones. Keep in mind that DATA Correction updates your actual data!

WriteBackExtreme can connect to multiple databases, but the data will always stay in the database you selected when you created the schema.

### Where does the data live for repository and which databases are supported?

During installation, WriteBackExtreme sets up a dedicated Repository Database. This database is separate from your Write Back databases and is preferably installed on the same machine as the WriteBackExtreme Extension Server to avoid latency and performance issues.

The repository serves as a central location for configuration, connection details (securely encrypted), auditing, and logging information. It does **not** store or process your business data—only metadata required for the extension to operate.

Supported database types for the repository can be found here:

# Data handling and security in WriteBackExtreme (SaaS)

WriteBackExtreme is designed with data integrity and operational transparency in mind. Here's how data is handled during the writeback process in our **SaaS deployment**:

* **Data Transmission**: Entered data is passed directly to the configured target database during the writeback operation.
* **Audit Trail**: A copy of the submitted data is stored in an **audit table** within the WriteBackExtreme repository database, providing traceability and accountability.
* **Linked Mark Data**: When interacting with marks in Tableau (e.g., adding a comment), the extension stores references to these marks to preserve context.
* **No Data Inspection**: WriteBackExtreme **does not inspect, log, or process** the content of user-entered data beyond storage for audit and linking purposes.
* **System Logs**: Operational logs are collected (e.g., for error reporting), but **they do not include any user-entered data**.

We understand the importance of keeping architecture secure and transparent. On our roadmap for this year, we plan to introduce a feature that allows both audit data and linked data to be stored **directly on the target connection database instead of our repository**. Once this is released, this will provide full control and transparency over where and how your data is stored.
